First Grade - Hybrid

First Grade is a year devoted to extending the foundations of God’s Love. This is a year to build upon the foundation of math focusing on basic facts, place value, mental math, and geometry. Reading comes to life in First as we strengthen phonics skills and extend towards creative writing and fluency. Hands-on science ramps up and plants the seeds for a life-long love of exploration.

SCIENCE

The core of this science curriculum uses several books such as Foss Science curriculum. This science program focuses on God’s amazing world and is supplemented with many hands-on activities.

MATH

Valor Christian Academy uses Sadlier math  for our math curriculum. Sadlier math offers:

  • Extensive opportunities for practice of concepts and fact memorization
  • A focus on conceptual development of numeracy
  • Multiple ways to develops math fluency and conceptual understanding
  • Support for deepening the vocabulary of numeracy and cognitive rigor
  • Digital tools for families on their at-home days

READING

Students participate in a focused phonics-based reading program.  Parents are  also encouraged to read aloud to the students as much as possible. 

ART & MUSIC

VCA encourages children to have fun exploring the world of art through the use of their creativity, critical thinking and fine motor skills. Students explore different artists, styles and creative thinking that correlate with the humanities that  they are studying!
