Kindergarten - Hybrid

Kindergarten at Valor Christian Academy is not your typical A to Z, 1-2-3!  At VCA we believe that kindergarten is one of the most important foundational years because it is the student's first impression of learning in a structured environment.  All year long we journey with the students to  help them explore the world around them.  Through a strong educational foundation, we encourage a child's love for learning, for community, for strong character, and most importantly, for God, their Creator.

HOLISTIC CURRICULUM
The year-long kindergarten curriculum combines Bible, character development, children's literature, beginning reading, exploratory creation-based science, basic math with Sadlier Math, fine art, drama, classical music, and creative thinking.

PHONICS & READING
Reading is taught with a highly successful multi-sensory phonics approach. Hands-on and workbook activities are combined to teach letter names, letter sounds, sound blending, and correct handwriting. Students learn to read short vowel words. By mid-year they are reading very simple stories.

Students participate in a focused phonics-based reading program.   Parents are  also encouraged to read aloud to the students as much as possible. Favorite  books such as, Goodnight Moon, Johnny Appleseed, Are you my Mother?, Danny and the Dinosaur and many more will be incorporated into the heart of the theme for each week.

SCIENCE
Our creation-based science is taught through the lens of the weekly theme.  The first two weeks of class, your student will focus on the creation story from Genesis, followed by 26 hands-on, thematic units that focus on the wonders in God's creation. Each five-day unit focuses on one alphabet letter and one corresponding science topic. For example, in Lesson 1, "S-s-sun," students learn letter "s" and number 1, study about the sun, construct and use a sundial, observe and chart grapes as they become raisins, paint a sun, listen to a funny book about shadows, and learn that, like the sun, Jesus is the light of the world. The sun, moon, rocks, vegetables, elephants, butterflies, and dinosaurs are just a few of the exciting topics your student will explore!

The core of this science curriculum also uses several books such as Foss Science curriculum. This science program focuses on God’s amazing world and is supplemented with hands-on activities and additional science books from the library.

ART & MUSIC
VCA encourages children to have fun exploring the world of art through the use of their creativity, critical thinking and fine motor skills. Students explore different artists, mediums, and creative thinking that correlate with the humanities that they are studying!  Each of the weekly themes are integrated into the art class.  For example, when they are studying the sun, they may create a sun out of clay and paint it after it has been fired in the kiln!
